MAKING VAN GOGH
October 23, 2019 till February 16, 2020 - Städel Museum
The extensive Van Gogh exhibition 2019 at the Städel Museum will focus on Vincent van Gogh’s work in the context of its German reception. Germany played a key role in the Dutch painter’s success story. It was here that the artist was considered one of the most important precursors of modern painting within less than fifteen years after his death – earlier than in other countries.
The show’s point of departure is a selection of major works from all phases of the Dutch painter’s career. In dialogue with paintings by German artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paula Modersohn-Becker or Max Beckmann, the presentation illustrates Vincent van Gogh’s role as a key figure for the art of the German avant-garde.
